Warning: i’m not at home. The previous two posts were already written for publishing. I brought a pen with pictures to make this post. It has been difficult doing it in a different computer and some recent pictures are missing. Still this week I’ll publish the Part II of this post, written at home I hope – be patient with me, please!

Hoje é o dia do ponto ajour simples
Ajour stitch / Single hem stitch today
Eu faço o ponto ajour do avesso, da esquerda para a direita e como é uma bainha estreita não uso bastidor;
I do single hem stitch on the back side and from left to right; as it is a narrow hem I’m not using a hoop;
As we have the folded linen we can begin as shown on the picture, inside the fold (i’m using DMC 25 in red for showing better)
– apanhar três fios – eu viro a agulha ao contrário, para evitar picar os fios; há quem faça tudo (até bordados de todos os tipos) com uma pequena agulha sem bico;
– passar a agulha, da direita para a esquerda, por baixo de três fios, formando o primeiro grupo de fios;
– take up three threads at a time – i turn over the needle, in order to avoid pricking some thread; you can use a tapestry needle – i know who does everything (even embroidery of all kinds) with a little tapestry needle;
– pass the needle, from right to left, under three threads, making the first cluster;
puxar o fio para a esquerda, à volta dos três fios;
pull the thread to left around the cluster;
– carry the needle on pricking the two sides of the linen (with the thread over the needle) to fix the hem;
(sorry the bad quality of some pictures)
puxar a linha no sentido da seta – este gesto é importante para ajustar o ponto à bainha, principalmente em bainhas abertas mais largas e que têm que ser feitas em bastidor, mas façam este gesto como uma rotina;
pull on direction shown by the arrow – this gesture/motion (?) is important to adjust the stitch to the hem, mainly on larger drawn threads which must be done with hoop or frame, but you must do this motion as a routine;
e continuem, sempre igual – é relaxante; se a linha acabar este é o remate que se faz aqui;
and go on and on the same way – is relaxing; if thread ends you do as shown at the picture only here;
e o lado direito;
the front side;
This is the ajour stitch /single hem stitch. Still I want to point out some little details.
being working on the back side of the work I always try taking up only one thread from the front side and two from the folded back side – can you see?
when we are near the corner count the threads (three at a time) in the direction of the arrow? Why? we would be very lucky if all were right at last cluster in the corner (it happens sometimes…); so we must count three by three threads (on this case) from the corner to where we are; at last if we have 5 threads it means you have to do two clusters with 4 threads, I suggest doing them spaced, if we have 4 threads we’ll do only one cluster with 4 threads; if we do all together just in the corner it could be noticed more, being the corners where our eyes fall more…
(não liguem à linha the baixo, a vermelho…)
this is an old picture but it shows you what I meant before: on the vertical hem I’ve done clusters with 3 threads and one with 4 threads and all is fixed for the corner; of course the cluster of 4 must be done much far from the corner… (don’t mind the red row on the bottom…)
in a narrow hem, two or four threads drawn, single hem stitch is enough, here we’ve drawn eight threads, so we’ll do hem stitch both sides, always on back side, called Ladder stitch hem.
the start;
o começo;
complete the hem, turning the work, repeating the same hem stitch taking up the same clusters of threads you’ve taken before – at first you have to carry the needle on the embroidery thread + one line thread (please don’t look at that corner :( )
and here we go – this side much easier;
e aqui vamos nós – este lado é muito mais fácil;
só um fio de linho apanhado
just one linen thread being held
sem nunca esquecer o movimento para baixo;
never forgetting the gesture towards down;
and here we have a Ladder stitch hem – the photos shows all the wrong things… using a magnifier would be very very usefull.
note: for some English terms i’ve used ENCYCLOPEDIA OF NEEDLEWORK (1884) – by Thérèse Dillmont
Have a great week. I’ll come back again this week with Part II, I hope.
