Finnaly I’ve started a work which would be done before Christmas. And I got a lot of work. Last September I bought linen for two tablecloths. One of them pretty big – it must have more or less 4 meters long at the end. I’ve never done drawn thread in a such fine linen – 26 threads/cm. As time goes by I become more and more bold in my projects I’ve to look for the magnifier my dear godson gave me. In this work I would really need this!

Mas lá comecei com o que tenho, e estava a avançar tão lentamente que me apeteceu, várias vezes, desistir… o fio não corria como desejava e estava sempre a partir.

So I began with what I have and was progressing so slowly that I often felt like giving up… the thread doesn’t pull as I wanted and always splitting.

Conseguem ver o que quero dizer? Lembrei-me, então que não tinha molhado o linho e ele tinha ainda aquela “goma”  de novo.
[não o molhei pois é uma peça tão grande que aqui não tenho onde estender e, diga-se em abono da verdade, normalmente não molho o linho antes de o bordar...]

Can you see what I mean? Then I remember I haven’t  soaked the linen and it has that “starch” of new fabric.
[I haven’t soaked it because it’s a so big piece that here I haven’t space to stretch it and I must say I never soak the linen before embroidering…)

Lembrei-me, então de esfregar o linho à medida que progredia.
So I decided to scrub the linen as I progressed.

E embora a tarefa não seja fácil, melhora alguma coisa. E devo dizer que, com a insistência fui melhorando – como tudo na vida, tem que se praticar, praticar e voltar a praticar para melhorar.
Though the task was not easy it improved something. Must be said that  with time I was improving – as everything in life we have to practice, practice and practice again to improve.

Now the hem is almost basted and the other piece (smaller) is drying

1 – São ilhós muito pequenos; pus o dedal e novelo , como refrência.
1 – These are very little eyelets, I put a thimble and a ball as reference.

2 – começo por contornar o círculo, com ponto adiante e
3 – volto para completar os espaços em branco

4 e 5 – com um stiletto abro um buraco, bem aberto e sem medo
4 e 5 – then with a stiletto a hole is open, well open without fear
6 – faz-se um pequeno rolinho sobre o ponto adiante e apanhando as fibras de tecido do buraco
6 – a thin roll is made over the running stitch and catching the fibers of the hole
7, 8 e 9 - cada ponto lado a lado, puxando bem o fio
7, 8 e 9 - each stitch side by side, pulling well the thread
ilhó de recorte / buttonhole eyelet
10 a 15 – o começo é o mesmo: ponto adiante à volta da forma e fazer o buraco, mas agora usa-se o ponto recorte lado a lado.
10 to 15 – the begin is the same: running stitch around and the hole making, now we use the buttonhole stitch side by side.

16 – Ao longo do processo pode  ser necessário alargar um pouco o buraco com o stiletto.
Para buracos maiores faço uma dupla carreira de ponto adiante e corto o tecido com uma tesoura delicada.
16 – Along the process you may need to enlarge the hole with the stilleto.
For bigger holes I do a double row of running stitches and use a delicate scissor to cut the fabric.

Slowly, I am answering emails. Thank you for the emails and comments.
I think I’m more or less recovered, but I can not even pick up the needles and thread. I feel many tinglings in the hands, especially on the left …
I don’t know how to edit here some funny Christmas videos, but managed to edit one on Flickr here. Meanwhile a few more photos of our Christmas. All the day 24th December is passed in the kitchen by some of us and the others are outside or inside with the children. At evening the men arrive at the kitchen to help with the big pans –  always an unforgettable and noisy scene as you can imagine!

Todas as meninas com cabelo suficiente fizeram tranças ou tótós. E o meu cunhado convenceu a minha neta do meio que era primo do Pai Natal!!!
Realmente esta malta é uma equipa e tanto!

O Natal foi muito, muito bom! Na ceia de Natal eramos 34 à mesa, dos quais 13 eram crianças. A minha neta mais nova (1 ano) estreou-se no bacalhau e adorou! Aliás adora tudo que seja de comer No dia 25 só eramos 32!
A confusão é sempre constante, mas à medida que as crianças crescem vão participando cada vez mais nas histórias que nestes dias se contam e/ou recordam. Temos conseguido – as minhas irmãs e eu – manter a ceia de Natal tradicional minhota: bacalhau cozido com batata, penca, cenoura, cebola, ovos e, este ano pela primeira vez, nabo. Tudo regado com azeite fervido com muita cebola e alho. Sobremesas tradicionais: as rabanadas e aletria (para o ano já está combinado: menos rabanadas e a introdução de leite creme queimado, que alguns sentem muita falta). Depois chegam mais umas tantas sobremesas, como o pudim abade de Priscos… e até um presépio com luz!!! um pouco de polvo, que também se come em muitas ceias do norte.
Arrumar a cozinha para a chegada do Menino Jesus, ajudado (agora) pelo pai Natal, por os sapatinhos e ir dormir depressa. A espera da manhã do dia 25 para entrar na cozinha até estarem todos acordados, é o momento mais difícil! Em todas as etapas deste(s) dia(s) o barulho é inacreditável.
[pairou sempre uma nuvem (espero que não muito escura) a lembrar que eu seria internada a 26, para ser operada a 27 - como se vê já passei o ano em casa e muito bem, muito obrigada ]

Antes e depois da visita do Menino Jesus. Before and after Baby Jesus visit.

Christmas was very, very good! At Christmas Eve table we were 34, 13 of whom were children. My youngest grandchild (1 year) debuted in the codfish and loved it! Indeed she loves to eat everything on 25th we were only 32!   Confusion is always constant, but the more children grow the more they participate in the stories these days are counted and recall. We succeeded – my sisters and I – keeping Minho traditional Christmas dinner: boiled codfish with potatoes, bunch, carrot, onion, eggs, turnip. All covered with boiled oil  with lots of onions and garlic. Traditional desserts: rabanadas and aletria (for next year is already combined: less rabanadas and the introduction of burnt cream, which some feel sorely missed). Then more desserts came as pudding Abade de Priscos … and even a sweet Nativity with lights!!! 
Clean the kitchen for the arrival of the Baby Jesus, nowadays helped by Santa Klaus, put the shoes on the fireplace and go to bed and sleep quickly. On 25th morning the difficulty is waiting that everybody is awake to enter in the kitchen!
In each moment of these days the noise is indescribable.
[a cloud (I hope not too dark) has always hovered  to remind that I would be admitted in the hospital at 26, to be operated at 27 - as you can see I've already spent the New Year at home and well, thank you ]

I” show you a work in progress – two linen towels with the monograms of my two youngest grand daughters – I’ve used palestrina stitch and satin stitch. It’s missing the drawn thread embelishements, which I’ll do later…
[as usual I went for Mary Corbet monograms; by the way, Mary has in pdf more than 120 Church (but not only) Embroidery patterns for hand embroidery, paper, appliqué, painting, only for $12!!!]

Next Monday we will begin works inside our house. I thought it would begin only next Spring … it will be a confusion and uproar!
In January I myself I will be into “works” …
For all that this blog will have fewer entries, maybe just pictures and very few words. Start today with two photos of scarves I made for the youngest granddaughter and a grandniece.

Adenda: modelo daqui; também tenho este kit e respectivo barrete, mas perdi as instruções   (mantenho as lãs para o cachecol e barrete guardadas, na esperanças de um dia as encontrar!)

Addendum: model from here, I also have this kit and its hat, but I’ve lost the instructions    (I keep the wool for scarf and hat stored in the hope one day I’ll find them!)
